The San Antonio Spurs have given Victor Wembanyama a long leash, as they should.

He doesn’t have a good supporting cast, or at least not a supporting cast who seems to fit around him.

Then again, just like great talents do, he’s found ways to dominate and make an impact on both ends of the floor regardless of his team’s flaws.

That was evident during the Spurs’ 13-point win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

The reigning No. 1 pick had the best game of his young career and one of the best games of the season overall, dropping 30 points with six boards, six assists, and a whopping seven blocks.

According to Bleacher Report, he’s now the only teenager in NBA history to record a 30/5/5/5 game (via StatMuse).

Perhaps he was trying to send a message, as Scoot Henderson had just said that the Rookie of the Year award was still up in the air and that he still had a chance to beat Wembanyama to it.

Wemby currently leads all rookies in points and rebounds per game, and he leads the entire league in blocks per game and total blocks.

His team has struggled mightily with a 5-25 record, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see that trend continue for the remainder of the season, but his rookie campaign can still be considered a major success.

Barring injury, it’s going to be quite hard for Henderson, Chet Holmgren, or anybody else to snatch this award away from the most exciting prospect in basketball.
