Kansas City Chiefs’ Clutch Win Overturned By Offside Penalty
On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to have scored a clutch win with just over a minute left when wide receiver Kadarius Toney caught a lateral pass from Travis Kelce and got into the end zone. But the play was called back as Toney was called for an offside penalty prior to the snap.
The Chiefs were leading the Denver Broncos 24-17 when the play happened, and the penalty cost them the game. The Chiefs were unable to score again and the Broncos won the game 24-23.
The penalty was a tough pill to swallow for the Chiefs, but head coach Andy Reid was quick to point out that the team was still proud of Toney’s effort.
“Kadarius Toney is a great player and he made a great play,” Reid said. “Unfortunately, he was called for an offside penalty, but we are still proud of him and the effort he put in.”
Reid also made it clear that Toney’s status with the team is not in question.
“Kadarius is a part of this team and he will continue to be,” Reid said. “He’s a great player and he will continue to be a great player for us.”
The Chiefs have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL this season, and Toney has been a big part of that success. He has caught 33 passes for 437 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season.
Toney has also been a key contributor on special teams, returning nine kickoffs for a total of 191 yards.
