“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets this organization apart is its focus on addressing the issue of anti-Semitism on college campuses. As a Jewish student himself, Neil Gajare recognized the need for a safe and inclusive space for Jewish students to discuss their experiences and concerns. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through various events and initiatives, they have created a supportive and inclusive environment for students of all backgrounds. And as a member of Salud, I can attest to the positive experiences I have had with this organization.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is their annual Mental Health Awareness Week. This week-long event aims to raise awareness about mental health and destigmatize seeking help for mental health issues. Through workshops, panel discussions, and self-care activities, Salud creates a safe space for students to openly talk about their mental health struggles. As someone who has personally struggled with mental health, I found this event to be incredibly empowering and comforting. It reminded me that I was not alone in my struggles and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Salud also hosts regular Shabbat dinners, where students from all backgrounds come together to share a meal and engage in meaningful conversations. These dinners not only provide a sense of community but also promote interfaith dialogue and understanding. As a non-Jewish member of Salud, I have learned so much about Jewish culture and traditions through these dinners. It has also allowed me to form friendships with students I may not have otherwise met.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just the UPenn community. They have also partnered with other organizations to spread their message of inclusivity and promote mental health awareness. One such partnership was with the Anti-Defamation League, where Salud organized a panel discussion on combating anti-Semitism on college campuses. This event not only educated students about the issue but also provided a platform for open and honest discussions. It was heartening to see students from different backgrounds come together to stand against hate and discrimination.
Another initiative that Salud has taken is the creation of a mental health resource guide specifically for Jewish students. This guide provides information on mental health resources available on campus and in the community, as well as tips for self-care and managing stress. As someone who has struggled to find resources that cater to my specific needs, I am grateful for this guide and the effort put into creating it.
But perhaps the most significant impact of Salud is the sense of community it has created. Through their events and initiatives, Salud has brought together students from diverse backgrounds and fostered a sense of belonging. As a member of Salud, I have found a supportive and inclusive community that has helped me grow and learn.
Neil Gajare‘s vision for Salud has truly made a positive impact on the UPenn community. His dedication and passion for promoting health and wellness, along with addressing the issue of anti-Semitism, have inspired many students to get involved and make a difference. Salud has not only created a safe space for Jewish students but has also brought together students from all backgrounds to promote a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
In conclusion, Salud is more than just an organization; it is a movement towards a healthier and more inclusive community. Through their events and initiatives, Salud has made a positive impact on the UPenn community and beyond. And as a member of Salud, I am proud to be a part of this movement and to see the positive changes it continues to bring.
