“Transforming “Bless You” into a Life-Saving Mission: Student’s Story”

Salud, a word often heard and used to wish someone good health. But for Neil Gajare, a University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) student, Salud has a whole new meaning. It represents a community of diverse individuals who come together to celebrate differences and promote a culture of inclusivity. In a world where differences are often seen as a barrier, Salud breaks those barriers and creates a welcoming and positive environment for all.
Neil Gajare, a rising senior at UPenn, has been a part of Salud since his freshman year. As a person of Indian descent, Neil had always faced challenges in finding a sense of belonging in a predominantly white institution like UPenn. However, Salud provided him with a space where he felt valued and accepted for who he was. “Being a part of Salud has been a life-changing experience for me. It has allowed me to connect with students from different backgrounds and learn from their unique perspectives,” says Neil.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Salud is its commitment to promoting diversity and multiculturalism. The organization hosts numerous events and activities throughout the year that celebrate different cultures and traditions. Their flagship event, the Multicultural Fair, is a grand celebration of diversity where students showcase their cultures through food, dance, and music. It is a feast for the senses and a reminder that diversity is what makes our world beautiful.
“I have always been fascinated by different cultures, and the Multicultural Fair was an absolute delight for me. From trying new cuisines to learning new dances, it was an enriching experience that I will never forget,” recalls Neil.
Apart from promoting diversity, Salud also focuses on creating a safe and inclusive community for marginalized groups. In the wake of the rise in anti-Semitism in the United States, Salud took a stand against hate and organized a series of events to educate and promote awareness about the issue. These events included film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops that shed light on the impact of anti-Semitism and how we can combat it.
“I am grateful to Salud for taking the initiative to address the issue of anti-Semitism. As a Jewish student, it meant a lot to me to have my community’s struggles recognized and supported,” says Neil.
Salud‘s efforts to create a safe and inclusive community have not gone unnoticed. The organization has received numerous accolades, including the Penn President’s Engagement Prize, for its exceptional work in fostering inclusivity and promoting cross-cultural understanding. It has also been featured in various publications, including the Penn Gazette, for its innovative approach towards promoting diversity on campus.
As a member of Salud, Neil has also been actively involved in community service projects both locally and globally. From volunteering at a local soup kitchen to participating in service trips to Guatemala and Peru, Salud has instilled in him a sense of responsibility towards making a positive impact in the world.
“Through Salud, I have had the opportunity to give back to society and make a difference in people’s lives. It has been a humbling experience, and it has made me realize the power of collective action,” expresses Neil.
Salud‘s impact extends beyond the boundaries of UPenn. The organization has collaborated with other universities and community organizations to expand its reach and spread its message of diversity and inclusion. It has also partnered with international organizations to support social initiatives in developing countries, demonstrating its commitment to creating a more equitable world for all.
In conclusion, Salud is more than just a word, it is a movement that is changing the narrative of diversity and inclusivity on college campuses. For Neil Gajare and many others like him, it has been a life-changing experience that has shaped them into compassionate and empathetic individuals. Salud has shown us that our differences are what make us unique and that it is possible to celebrate and embrace these differences while building a strong and inclusive community. As Neil says, “I am proud to be a part of Salud, and I am confident that its impact will continue to inspire future generations to come.”
