Bailundo, located in the Huambo province, now has a 7.992 MWdc solar plant.

The Solar Energy Production Plant will benefit over 51,023 residents in Bailundo, Huambo province. Today, December 12th, the Minister of Energy and Water is visiting Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo as part of his agenda in the southern region.

This Tuesday, December 12th, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Bailundo to mark the start of construction for a 7.992 MWdc Photovoltaic Solar Plant, part of the Angola 2025 Plan. This government initiative aims to increase electrification using green energy sources, providing more affordable and cleaner power to local homes and businesses, and enabling the transition from fossil fuel-based electricity to continuous renewable energy.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, accompanied by Provincial Governor Notti Nolika, the King of Bailundo Chiongolola Chongonga, and senior officials from MINEA, the energy sector, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and the local government. The Consignment Agreement was signed by senior officials from PRODEL and MCA, representing the Angolan government, with participation from PRODEL’s Chairman of the Board, Pedro Eduardo Afonso, assisted by Haillé Arrissandro Vieira Dias Ferrão, and the MCA consortium – Manuel Couto Alves, the project’s contractor.

During the event, the minister highlighted President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço’s priority to ensure more Angolan families have access to clean and affordable energy, aiming to reach 70% of the National Energy Matrix with renewable energies by 2027. This project, valued at EUR 20,271,445.00, is expected to be completed within three months of the contract signing date, involving the installation of 15,600 solar panels, anticipated savings of around EUR 6,117,409.32, and the creation of 50 direct jobs.

After the ceremony, the minister and his delegation visited the project site and then traveled to the municipality of Ecunha to assess the progress of electrification works.
