The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is a highly anticipated event where the party comes together to unite behind their chosen presidential candidate. However, this year’s convention showed a disturbing trend of the ruling establishment and corporate media working together to present a distorted version of reality, particularly when it comes to the Biden-Harris Administration’s support for Israel’s brutal and genocidal war on Gaza.
Throughout the convention, the DNC and mainstream media repeatedly portrayed Biden and Harris as champions of justice and human rights, completely glossing over their unwavering support for Israel’s ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people. This is a perfect example of how the ruling elite and media work hand in hand to curate a fantasy version of reality, shielding the American public from the harsh truth.
Despite the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the damage has already been done. Over 250 Palestinians, including 66 children, have been killed in Gaza, while thousands more have been injured and displaced. On the other hand, Israel, with its sophisticated military arsenal, has suffered minimal casualties. This grossly disproportionate response by Israel was condemned by the United Nations and human rights organizations as a violation of international law and a blatant disregard for human life.
However, during the DNC, there was barely any mention of the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. Instead, Biden and Harris were presented as saviors who will bring about positive change and restore American values. This whitewashing of their support for Israel’s aggression is a deliberate attempt to maintain the status quo and continue the unconditional backing of Israel by the United States.
It is no secret that the United States has been a staunch ally of Israel, providing them with billions of dollars in military aid every year. This unwavering support has only emboldened Israel to continue its illegal occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people. And despite Biden’s talk of being a progressive leader, his track record tells a different story.
During his time as a senator, Biden has consistently voted in favor of military aid to Israel, even when it was used to carry out attacks on innocent Palestinian civilians. He has also opposed efforts to hold Israel accountable for its human rights violations and has remained silent on the issue of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. In fact, Biden has proudly proclaimed himself as a Zionist and has promised to maintain the “special relationship” between the US and Israel.
Harris, too, has a troubling record when it comes to Palestine. As a senator, she has consistently voted in favor of bills that support Israel’s military and economic dominance in the region. She has also opposed efforts to boycott or divest from Israel, which are non-violent means of holding the country accountable for its actions. Despite being a woman of color, Harris has failed to stand up for the rights of oppressed communities, including Palestinians.
By ignoring the atrocities in Gaza and presenting Biden and Harris as champions of justice, the DNC and corporate media are perpetuating a false narrative. They are not only whitewashing the Biden-Harris Administration’s support for Israel’s brutal war on Gaza, but they are also disregarding the voices and struggles of the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, this biased and one-sided coverage of the conflict perpetuates the harmful idea that the lives of Palestinians are worth less than those of Israelis. It also sends a dangerous message that the United States will continue to support Israel’s occupation and aggression, regardless of its human rights violations.
As Americans, we must demand accountability from our leaders and media. We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of innocent civilians, regardless of their nationality or religion. We must also hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and demand that they stand up for justice and human rights, both domestically and internationally.
It is time for the ruling establishment and corporate media to stop curating a fantasy version of reality and start acknowledging the harsh truth. The Palestinian people deserve justice and freedom, and it is our responsibility to stand in solidarity with them. The DNC may have painted a rosy picture, but it is up to us to see through the façade and demand real change and accountability.
