EFF slams Jonas’ US envoy appointment over MTN-Iran ties

The recent news of former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas being appointed as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States has sparked controversy and debate within political circles. The latest criticism comes from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, who has labeled the appointment as “unfortunate” due to Jonas’ links with MTN, a telecommunications company with ties to Iran, a US adversary.

In a statement released by the EFF, Ndlozi expressed concern over the potential conflict of interest that may arise from Jonas’ appointment. He stated, “We find it unfortunate that a former government official with links to a company that has been accused of violating US sanctions against Iran has been chosen to represent our country in the US.”

MTN has faced numerous allegations of doing business with Iran, despite the country being under US sanctions. In 2012, the company was fined $5.2 billion by the US government for violating these sanctions. This has raised questions about Jonas’ suitability for the role of ambassador, as he previously served as non-executive director of MTN from 2015 to 2017.

The EFF has also raised concerns about the potential influence of MTN on South African foreign policy, particularly in relation to the US and Iran. Ndlozi stated, “We cannot have a situation where our foreign policy is influenced by the interests of a private company, especially one that has been accused of disregarding international laws.”

The party has called on the South African government to reconsider Jonas’ appointment and instead appoint someone with a clean record and no potential conflicts of interest. Ndlozi also urged the government to be transparent and accountable in the process of selecting ambassadors, stating that “appointments should be based on merit and not political connections or personal interests.”

However, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has defended Jonas’ appointment, stating that he is highly qualified for the role and has the necessary experience and knowledge to represent South Africa in the US. The party also dismissed the EFF’s allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement, the ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe stated, “We reject any insinuations that the appointment of comrade Jonas is influenced by any private interests. He has a long and distinguished career in public service and has served our country with dedication and integrity.”

The party also highlighted Jonas’ role in exposing state capture and corruption in South Africa, stating that he has shown a commitment to upholding the values of good governance and accountability.

Despite the criticism, Jonas remains positive and determined to serve his country in his new role. In an interview with a local news channel, he stated, “I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to represent South Africa in the US. I will use my experience and knowledge to promote our country’s interests and strengthen our bilateral relations with the US.”

Jonas also assured that he has no conflicts of interest and has always acted in the best interest of the country during his tenure at MTN. He stated, “I have always been transparent and ethical in my dealings and will continue to do so in my new role as ambassador.”

In conclusion, while the EFF may have raised valid concerns about potential conflicts of interest, it is important to trust in the government’s decision and give Jonas a chance to prove himself as a capable and dedicated ambassador. Let us support him in his new role and hope that he will continue to uphold the values of good governance and accountability in representing our country in the US.
