‘It was part of the job’: Ex-tabloid reporter on scandal at heart of ITV’s The Hack

Former News of the World reporter turned hostel owner, Jack Thompson, has recently opened up about his new venture in Kent, just as ITV’s latest drama, The Hack, brings to light the infamous phone hacking scandal.

Thompson, who spent years working for the now-defunct British tabloid, has stepped away from the world of journalism and into the world of hospitality, opening two hostels in the picturesque county of Kent. The first, named The Paper Trail Hostel, is located in the charming town of Whitstable, while the second, aptly named The Newsbreaker Hostel, can be found in the historic city of Canterbury.

The decision to leave behind the fast-paced and often controversial world of tabloid journalism was not an easy one for Thompson. But after the phone hacking scandal rocked the industry and resulted in the closure of the News of the World, he felt it was time for a change. “I wanted to do something positive and give back to the community,” Thompson explains. “After everything that happened, I realized that I wanted to make a difference and help people in a meaningful way.”

And that’s exactly what Thompson is doing with his hostels. Both properties provide affordable and comfortable accommodation for travelers, while also giving back to the local community. The Paper Trail Hostel partners with a local charity, providing job training and opportunities for disadvantaged youth. The Newsbreaker Hostel, on the other hand, works with a non-profit organization that supports the homeless, offering them accommodation and a chance to get back on their feet. “I wanted to create more than just a place to stay,” Thompson says. “I wanted to create a welcoming and inclusive community that supports and empowers those in need.”

Thompson’s decision to open hostels in Kent was no coincidence. Having grown up in the area, he has a strong affinity for the county and wanted to showcase its beauty and charm to travelers. “Kent has so much to offer, from stunning beaches to historic castles and picturesque towns,” Thompson says. “I wanted to share this with others and show them a different side of England.”

But with the recent premiere of ITV’s drama, The Hack, which tells the story of a tabloid journalist caught up in the phone hacking scandal, some may question Thompson’s past and his connection to the infamous scandal. However, Thompson is quick to clarify that he was not involved in any illegal activities and was simply doing his job as a journalist. “The events depicted in the show are a dark part of my former industry, but it’s important to remember that not all journalists were involved in these practices,” Thompson states. “I made the decision to leave the tabloid world before any of this came to light and I am proud of the work I am doing now.”

Thompson’s hostels have already received positive reviews from travelers, who appreciate the comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the opportunity to support local charities. And with the recent rise in ethical and sustainable travel, The Paper Trail and The Newsbreaker are becoming popular choices for those looking for more meaningful and responsible accommodations.

As for Thompson, he is excited about the future of his hostels and the impact they can make. “I may have left my career in journalism behind, but I am proud of the work I am now doing in the hospitality industry,” Thompson says. “My hope is that The Hack will not only shed light on the phone hacking scandal, but also showcase the positive impact that my fellow ex-journalists are making in other industries.”

Thompson’s story serves as a reminder that even in the face of controversy, there is always a chance for redemption and a way to make a positive impact. The Paper Trail and The Newsbreaker Hostels stand as a testament to his determination to make a difference and show the world a different side of journalism.
