Letters: Tricky numbers make AI centers seem thirsty

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been five years since the East Bay Times published letters from its readers on October 14, 2025. As I sat down to revisit these letters, I was struck by the recurring themes of under-representation, plain unfairness, jail spending, the need for clean and safe environments, and the barriers to meritocracy. These letters truly reflected the concerns and hopes of our community, and it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made since then.

One of the biggest issues raised in the letters was the under-representation of certain communities in positions of power and influence. It’s heartening to see that in the past five years, we’ve seen a significant increase in diversity and inclusivity across various fields, from politics to media to corporate leadership. This has been made possible by the tireless efforts of individuals and organizations who have been advocating for equal representation and opportunities for all. While there is still a long way to go, the progress we’ve made is a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering determination of our community.

Another pressing concern that emerged from the letters was the sheer unfairness that many of our fellow citizens were facing. From discrimination in the workplace to unequal access to education and healthcare, it was clear that many people were struggling to make ends meet due to systemic injustices. The good news is that there has been a concerted effort to address these issues and level the playing field for all. We’ve seen initiatives to improve access to education and job opportunities for marginalized communities, as well as measures to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity. These efforts have brought about tangible improvements in the lives of many, and we must continue to push for a fair and just society for all.

On the topic of jail spending, the readers’ concerns were spot on. In the past few years, there has been a growing movement to rethink our approach to criminal justice and move away from incarceration as the default solution. Instead, there has been a shift towards investing in preventive measures and rehabilitation programs that have proven to be more effective in reducing crime rates and promoting societal well-being. This change in mindset has also led to a reduction in jail spending, allowing for more resources to be allocated towards programs that address the root causes of crime.

A recurring theme in the letters was the importance of clean and safe environments for our communities. It’s no secret that our planet is facing environmental challenges, and our community is no exception. The good news is that in the past five years, we’ve seen a significant increase in awareness and action towards protecting the environment. From clean energy initiatives to waste management programs, there has been a growing push towards sustainability and creating a safer and healthier environment for future generations. It’s inspiring to see individuals, businesses, and governments coming together to address this critical issue.

Finally, the letters highlighted the barriers to meritocracy that many people face in our society. It’s unfortunate that factors like race, gender, and socio-economic status can still hinder someone’s opportunities to succeed, despite their talents and hard work. However, we’ve seen a growing movement towards creating a level playing field and promoting merit-based opportunities for all. This has been possible through efforts like diversity and inclusion initiatives, equal pay movements, and transparency in the hiring process. There’s still a long way to go, but the progress we’ve made in the past few years is a promising sign for a more meritocratic society.

As I reflect on the letters from 2025, I am filled with hope and optimism for the future. We’ve come a long way in addressing the concerns and challenges raised by our fellow community members, and we must continue to push for progress and positive change. We must never forget that it’s our collective responsibility to create a more inclusive, fair, and prosperous society for all. Let’s all strive towards making the next five years even more transformative and impactful for our community.
