South Africa has lost a great leader and politician, Mosiuoa Lekota, who passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hospital in Midrand. The news of his passing has left the nation in shock and mourning, as he was a prominent figure in the political arena.
Lekota, affectionately known as “Terror” by his comrades and supporters, was born on 13 August 1948 in Kroonstad, Free State. He dedicated his life to serving the people of South Africa and fighting for their rights, even at great personal risk.
His journey in politics began in the 1970s as a student activist, where he joined the Black Consciousness Movement and was involved in various anti-apartheid demonstrations. In the late 1970s, he joined the United Democratic Front and was actively involved in the struggle against apartheid.
In 1990, with the unbanning of political parties, Lekota joined the African National Congress (ANC) and played a significant role in the negotiations for a democratic South Africa. He served as the ANC’s first Free State provincial chairperson and became the first Premier of the province after the 1994 elections.
In 1997, he was appointed as the Minister of Defence and played a crucial role in the integration of the former armed forces and the transformation of the South African National Defense Force. He also served as the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Minister of Defense again under the Thabo Mbeki administration.
But it was in 2008 when Lekota made a bold move and left the ANC to form the Congress of the People (COPE), a new political party. He believed that the ANC’s values and principles were being eroded by corruption and he could no longer be part of it. COPE showed great promise, with Lekota at the helm, and gained significant support in the 2009 elections.
Lekota continued to be an influential figure in South African politics, serving as the leader of COPE and as a Member of Parliament. He never wavered in his fight against corruption and injustice, and his unwavering commitment to a democratic and prosperous South Africa earned him respect from all sides of the political spectrum.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lekota, describing him as a “dedicated leader who served his country with distinction.” He also praised Lekota for his contribution to the struggle and his role in the formation of the democratic South Africa.
Lekota’s passing has left a void in the political landscape, and he will be remembered for his fearless leadership, integrity and unwavering dedication to the ideals of a democratic and free South Africa. He was a true patriot who dedicated his entire life to the service of his country and its people.
His legacy and the values he stood for will continue to inspire future generations of leaders. It is now up to us to carry on his work and honor his memory by upholding the principles of democracy, justice and equality for all.
As we mourn the loss of a great leader, let us also celebrate his life and all that he achieved. Mosiuoa Lekota’s contributions to the struggle for freedom and democracy will forever be remembered and cherished. May his soul rest in peace.
