Labor Organizer Explains Why Target is Key to Fighting Against ICE in Minnesota

As the immigration debate continues to dominate the political landscape in the United States, many corporations are facing pressure to take a stance on the issue. One company that has come under the spotlight in this regard is Target, and labor organizer Veronica Mendez Moore believes they are the key to leading the corporate push against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota.

Veronica Mendez Moore is the co-director of CTUL, an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of low-wage workers in the Twin Cities. She and her colleagues have been at the forefront of the fight against ICE’s aggressive tactics targeting immigrant communities in Minnesota.

In a recent interview, Moore explained why unions, worker centers, and other organizations are focusing on Target specifically to promote change and protect vulnerable workers.

Target Corporation, with its headquarters in Minneapolis, is one of the largest companies in the state with over 1,800 stores nationwide. It is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, and many employees are proud to work for a company that embraces these values.

Moore believes that this is precisely why Target is a crucial piece in the puzzle of challenging ICE’s policies and practices.

“We know that the retail, janitorial, and food service industries, which Target is a part of, are some of the biggest employers of undocumented workers,” Moore stated. “These workers are integral to the success of these companies, but they are also at risk of being targeted and separated from their families by ICE.”

By focusing on Target, Moore and her colleagues hope to leverage the company’s values and reputation to push for change. In addition, as a major contributor to the local economy, Target holds significant political influence that can be used to advocate for immigrant rights.

Target’s leadership has already taken a positive step in publicly denouncing the Trump administration’s family separation policy, and they have also expressed support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. However, Moore and other activists are now calling on the company to take a more active role in ensuring that their workforce is protected from ICE’s aggressive tactics.

“A statement is a start, but we need concrete actions to ensure that Target workers and their families are not living in fear of being torn apart,” Moore emphasized.

One of the ways CTUL is working with Target is by calling on the company to join the growing number of employers who are limiting their cooperation with ICE. This includes refusing to allow ICE agents into their workplaces without a warrant and not sharing employee information with the agency unless legally required.

Target has also been urged to adopt policies that protect immigrant workers from retaliation. Fear of retaliation from employers has been a significant barrier for immigrant workers in speaking out against workplace violations or reporting abuse by ICE.

Additionally, CTUL and its partner organizations are calling on Target to increase wages and improve working conditions for all its employees, including those who are undocumented and often work in low-wage positions.

Moore and her team are confident that with Target’s support, they can bring about positive changes that will not only benefit the company’s employees but also set an example for other corporations to follow.

“We believe that Target can be a leader in the fight against ICE’s unjust practices and can help create a safer and more inclusive workplace for all workers,” Moore stated. “Together, we can build a movement that puts human rights at the forefront and empowers workers to speak out against injustice.”

Target has the opportunity to set a precedent in corporate responsibility and demonstrate that protecting immigrant workers is not only the right thing to do but also benefits their bottom line. As Moore aptly puts it, “Target has the power to be an ally and lead the way for others to follow.”

In these uncertain times, it is vital that corporations like Target step up and use their influence for good. With the support and collaboration of organizations like CTUL, we can work towards a more just and inclusive society for all, regardless of their immigration status.
