Last week, South Africa lost a true leader and patriot. Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota, commonly known as “Terror”, passed away at the age of 73. He had been battling an illness for some time and unfortunately, he succumbed to it. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many South Africans, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Lekota was a man of great courage, determination, and resilience. He dedicated his life to the fight against apartheid, even at the risk of his own safety. He was a fearless activist who played a crucial role in the struggle for freedom and democracy in our country. He was a founding member of the United Democratic Front and served as the Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC) during the 1990s.

Lekota’s contribution to the liberation of South Africa cannot be overstated. He was a key figure in the negotiations for a democratic South Africa and played a vital role in the drafting of our country’s constitution. He also served as the Minister of Defence and Minister of Defence and Military Veterans in the post-apartheid government. He was a true statesman who always put the interests of the country and its people above his own.

Apart from his political achievements, Lekota was also a respected businessman and community leader. He was the founder and chairman of the Mosiuoa Lekota Foundation, which aimed to empower and uplift disadvantaged communities in South Africa. He was a firm believer in education and was passionate about providing opportunities for young people to succeed. He will be remembered as a leader who not only fought for political freedom but also for economic freedom for all South Africans.

Lekota’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from all corners of the country. Many have described him as a true hero and a selfless leader who always put the needs of others before his own. President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to Lekota, saying, “He was a giant of our struggle, a leader of great courage and conviction, and a patriot of the highest order.” The ANC also released a statement, saying, “We have lost a stalwart, a leader, and a comrade who dedicated his life to the service of the people of South Africa.”

Lekota will be laid to rest this Saturday in his hometown of Bloemfontein. The funeral service will be held at the Mangaung Outdoor Sports Centre and will be attended by family, friends, and dignitaries from across the country. It will be a somber occasion as we bid farewell to a great man, but it will also be a celebration of his life and his achievements.

As we mourn the loss of Lekota, we must also remember the lessons he taught us. He showed us the power of determination, the importance of standing up for what is right, and the value of selfless service. He was a true leader who led by example and inspired others to do the same. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all those who were touched by his life.

In his honor, let us continue to work towards a better South Africa, one that he fought so hard for. Let us strive to uphold the values of democracy, equality, and justice that Lekota stood for. And let us never forget the sacrifices he made for our country and its people.

Rest in peace, Tata Lekota. Your memory will forever be cherished, and your legacy will continue to inspire us.
