Iran denies talks with US but confirms a ‘negotiation request’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has stated that despite the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war, the United States has submitted a “negotiation request” to Iran. Baqaei made this announcement during a press briefing on Monday, clarifying that Iran has not engaged in any negotiations with the Trump administration since the conflict began.

In the past 31 days, Iran has remained steadfast in its stance of not engaging in any talks with the United States. Baqaei emphasized that Iran has not wavered from this position and has not entered into any discussions with American officials. This statement comes as a response to recent reports claiming that the U.S. has been seeking negotiations with Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson reiterated that Iran’s position on negotiations with the U.S. remains unchanged. He stated that Iran will not engage in any talks until the U.S. lifts all sanctions imposed on the country and returns to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

The JCPOA, signed in 2015, was a landmark agreement between Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. However, in 2018, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the deal and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran, causing significant economic hardship for the Iranian people.

Despite the U.S.’s withdrawal, Iran remained committed to the JCPOA and continued to comply with its obligations under the agreement. However, in response to the U.S.’s actions, Iran gradually reduced its compliance with the deal, citing the other parties’ failure to fulfill their commitments.

Baqaei’s statement reaffirms Iran’s position that any negotiations with the U.S. can only take place if the U.S. returns to the JCPOA and lifts all sanctions. This stance reflects Iran’s principled approach to resolving conflicts through diplomacy and dialogue.

Iran has consistently maintained that it is open to negotiations with the U.S. if the U.S. shows genuine willingness to engage in respectful and equal talks. However, the U.S.’s actions, including the assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and the imposition of harsh sanctions, have only further strained the already tense relations between the two countries.

Despite the U.S.’s attempts to initiate negotiations, Iran has remained firm in its stance, sending a clear message that it will not be coerced into talks under pressure. Iran’s refusal to engage in negotiations under these circumstances is a testament to its strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

Furthermore, Baqaei’s statement also highlights the U.S.’s desperation to engage in talks with Iran. The U.S.’s submission of a “negotiation request” is a clear indication that its maximum pressure campaign against Iran has failed, and it is now seeking a way out of the conflict.

Iran has repeatedly stated that it is ready to engage in talks with the U.S. if the U.S. shows genuine respect and adheres to international laws and norms. However, the U.S.’s actions, including its withdrawal from the JCPOA and its aggressive policies towards Iran, have only further escalated tensions in the region.

In conclusion, Iran’s steadfast refusal to engage in negotiations with the U.S. during the ongoing conflict is a clear demonstration of its commitment to upholding its principles and defending its sovereignty. Iran remains open to dialogue and diplomacy, but it will not be coerced into talks under pressure. The U.S. must take concrete steps towards de-escalation and show genuine willingness to engage in respectful and equal talks if it wants to resolve the conflict with Iran.
