EXCLUSIVE: UAW’s Shawn Fain on Trump, Democrats, & winning the class war

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), at the Democratic National Convention. As the largest labor union representing factory workers in the United States, the UAW’s endorsement of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election has caused quite a stir. We sat down with Mr. Fain to dive deeper into why the UAW has endorsed Harris-Walz, what is at stake for working people and the labor movement in this election, and where Donald Trump stands in the ongoing class war.

First and foremost, we asked Mr. Fain why the UAW has chosen to endorse Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as their preferred candidates for the upcoming election. He explained that the decision was made after careful consideration and discussions within the union. The UAW chose to endorse Harris-Walz due to their strong support for workers’ rights and their commitment to protecting and creating good-paying manufacturing jobs. Both Biden and Harris have a long history of fighting for the middle class and working families, which aligns with the values and goals of the UAW.

But the endorsement of Harris-Walz goes beyond just their promises and rhetoric. Mr. Fain pointed out that Harris-Walz has put forward concrete plans to invest in American manufacturing, create millions of jobs, and ensure fair wages and working conditions for all. The UAW believes that Biden and Harris have a clear understanding of the challenges faced by workers and have the ability to implement real change. As Mr. Fain put it, “Harris-Walz is the best choice for the working class, and that’s why the UAW is standing behind them.”

Next, we delved into the crucial question of what is at stake for working people and the labor movement in this election. Mr. Fain did not hesitate to point out that the future of the labor movement depends on this election. With the current administration’s anti-worker policies and attacks on labor unions, the working class has faced significant setbacks. But the UAW is confident that a Biden-Harris presidency will bring about a much-needed change in this regard.

According to Mr. Fain, “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have a vision for an America where workers are treated with dignity and respect. They have promised to strengthen unions and collective bargaining rights, increase the minimum wage, and expand access to affordable healthcare and education.” These policies have long been advocated by the UAW, and they firmly believe that a Biden-Harris administration will improve the lives of working people and restore the power of the labor movement.

In light of the ongoing class war, we asked Mr. Fain about where Donald Trump fits into this picture. He did not hold back in his criticism of the current president, stating, “Donald Trump has repeatedly shown that he is on the side of big corporations and the wealthy elite, not the working class.” Mr. Fain pointed out that Trump’s policies, such as the tax cuts for the wealthy and attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, have only benefited the top 1% and left working families struggling.

Furthermore, the UAW president highlighted Trump’s attacks on labor unions, such as his support for right-to-work laws and his appointment of anti-union officials to the National Labor Relations Board. These actions, according to Mr. Fain, clearly demonstrate that Trump is not on the side of the working class.

In conclusion, our conversation with Shawn Fain, the president of the UAW, shed light on the union’s endorsement of Harris-Walz, the importance of this election for working people and the labor movement, and where Donald Trump stands in the ongoing class war. The UAW believes that Harris-Walz will bring much-needed change and protect the rights and interests of the working class. As we approach the election day, it is essential to remember the words of Mr. Fain, “The choice is clear, and the future of the working class and the labor movement is at stake. We must stand together and vote for Harris-Walz.”
