Rep. Raskin: Trump’s administration will ‘create a climate of fear and intimidation’ to govern. Don’t let them

Representing Maryland’s 8th District, Congressman Jamie Raskin reflects on the recent elections, where Democrats fell short, and what we need to be prepared for with Trump’s new administration.

As the dust settles from the 2020 election, Democrats across the country are left wondering what went wrong. Despite record-breaking voter turnout and a strong campaign, we were unable to secure the White House, Senate, and numerous down-ballot races. However, as we begin to analyze the results and look towards the future, it is important to remember that our fight is far from over.

Representing Maryland’s 8th District, I have seen firsthand the passion and dedication of my constituents to create positive change in our country. We have always been a strong Democratic stronghold, but this year’s election showed that we cannot become complacent. The results have served as a wake-up call for Democrats to regroup, reevaluate, and come back even stronger.

While it is easy to dwell on our losses, it is important to acknowledge the progress we have made. We must not forget that we flipped the House in 2018 and have maintained our majority in 2020. This is a significant achievement and one that we must build upon. Our victories in the House have allowed us to pass crucial legislation, such as the Heroes Act, which would provide much-needed relief to Americans during this pandemic.

However, it is clear that our message did not resonate with all voters, and we must assess why. One of the major reasons for our losses was the lack of a cohesive message. We have a diverse party with varying viewpoints, and while this is a strength, it can also be a weakness. It is imperative that we come together and present a clear, unified message to the American people. We need to focus on the issues that matter most to Americans, such as healthcare, the economy, and racial justice. We must also effectively communicate our plans to address these issues and make a positive impact in people’s lives.

Another factor that contributed to our losses was the Republican party’s relentless attacks on our candidates. They spread lies, misinformation, and fear in an attempt to sway voters. We must be prepared for these tactics in the future and have a plan to combat them. We need to continue to push for transparency and hold our opponents accountable for their actions. We must also work towards better regulating and addressing the spread of false information on social media platforms.

As we move forward, we must also be prepared for the challenges that will come with a new administration. The Trump administration has been a constant obstacle in our fight for progress, and we must be ready to navigate the roadblocks that will undoubtedly come our way. This includes fighting against any attempts to roll back the progress we have made and holding the new administration accountable for their actions.

But it is not all doom and gloom. With a new administration comes new opportunities for collaboration and progress. We must be willing to work with our colleagues across the aisle and find common ground where we can. We must also be open to learning from our mistakes and adapting our approach to better serve the American people.

In conclusion, while the recent elections may have been a setback for Democrats, it is crucial that we do not lose hope or give up the fight. We must continue to push forward, united and determined, to create a better future for all Americans. Representing Maryland’s 8th District, I am committed to working tirelessly towards this goal and I urge my fellow Democrats to do the same. Let us come together, learn from our mistakes, and be prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead. Because in the words of President Barack Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Let us be the change that America needs.
