After an impressive first season for Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson last year, the team and rising star Trevor Lawrence were thought to be one to watch during the 2023 NFL season, as many thought this team could be a title contender in the AFC.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for the Jaguars during the 2023 campaign.

Lawrence struggled throughout the season with his turnovers and the team simply was not the same dominant force defensively.

As if the team struggling wasn’t bad enough for Jacksonville, no one anticipated the Houston Texans to be a force to be reckoned with and good enough to win the AFC South division crown.

Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud turned out to be much better than expected, as did first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans, resulting in the Jaguars taking a backseat to the Texans and being forced to reassess things after missing the NFL playoffs.

According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Jaguars have parted ways with defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell, which could be the beginning of a defensive overhaul.

News in Jacksonville: Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell is being let go after two years on Doug Pederson’s staff. Defensive overhaul coming there.

Here are some fan reactions to the Jaguars surprisingly parting ways with Caldwell:

I thought Steelers fans had it bad with Canada but I couldn’t believe my eyes watching that Jags game yesterday with those play calls

With the Jaguars being a very talented team on both sides of the football, Pederson and company will want to salvage what they can during the NFL offseason while improving across the board.

It appears the defense could be a primary focus for the Jaguars, as Jacksonville will now look to keep up with and eventually surpass the Texans in the AFC South.
