Al Gore: It’s ‘Ridiculous’ UAE Hosted COP28 Climate Summit

Former Vice President Al Gore has spoken out against the UAE hosting the COP28 climate summit, calling it “ridiculous” in a recent interview. Gore, who has long been an advocate for the environment, made the comments on CNN’s “State of the Union” program.

The COP28 climate summit, held in Abu Dhabi in December 2019, was the largest international gathering of world leaders to discuss climate change and the need for urgent action. The UAE, a major oil-producing country, was chosen to host the event despite its own poor record on environmental issues.

Gore said he found it “kind of ridiculous” that a country with a poor environmental record was chosen to host the summit. He noted that the UAE has the highest per capita emissions of any country in the world, and that it has yet to take meaningful action to reduce its carbon footprint.

“It is a huge irony that the UAE, one of the world’s largest oil producers, was chosen to host the COP28 climate summit,” Gore said. “The UAE has yet to take meaningful action to reduce its carbon emissions, and it has the highest per capita emissions of any country in the world.”

Despite this, Gore said he was encouraged by the progress made at the summit, noting that many countries have pledged to reduce their emissions and to become carbon neutral by 2050. He also praised the UAE for its commitment to investing in renewable energy sources and for its efforts to reduce its dependence on oil.

“I believe that the UAE has made some progress in recent years, and I am encouraged by its commitment to investing in renewable energy sources and reducing its dependence on oil,” Gore said. “I am also encouraged by the progress made at the COP28 climate summit, and I hope that it will be a catalyst for further action.”

Gore also noted that the UAE has taken steps to reduce its plastic waste, such as banning single-use plastics and introducing a deposit-return system for plastic bottles. He said he was hopeful that the UAE could continue to lead the way in the fight against climate change.

“I hope that the UAE will continue to lead by example in the fight against climate change,” Gore said. “It has taken important steps to reduce its plastic waste, and I hope that it will continue to take further action to reduce its emissions and to become carbon neutral by 2050.”

In conclusion, Gore said he was encouraged by the progress made at the COP28 climate summit, but he also called on the UAE to do more to reduce its emissions and to become carbon neutral by 2050. He said he hoped that the UAE would continue to lead by example in the fight against climate change.
