Entrants from three Contra Costa community colleges recently took center stage at the districtwide 4CD Business Pitch Competition, showcasing a diverse range of innovative ideas and entrepreneurial skills. The competition, held at the Diablo Valley College on April 15th, was open to students from all three colleges in the district – Diablo Valley College, Contra Costa College, and Los Medanos College.
The event, organized by the Contra Costa Community College District’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, aimed at providing a platform for students to pitch their business ideas and receive valuable feedback from a panel of judges. The competition was also an opportunity for students to gain exposure, network with industry professionals, and potentially attract investors.
The pitches at the competition covered a wide array of industries, including technology, healthcare, and sustainability. Students presented their ideas in front of a panel of five judges, consisting of local business owners and entrepreneurs. Each participant had five minutes to present their business idea, followed by a question and answer session with the judges.
One of the standout pitches came from Diablo Valley College student, Sarah Rogers, who presented her idea for a mobile app that connects local farmers with consumers. The app aims to promote sustainable and healthy eating by providing easy access to fresh, locally grown produce. The judges were impressed with Sarah’s well-researched business plan and potential for growth. “I was blown away by the creativity and passion of these students,” said one of the judges.
Contra Costa College student, Michael Nguyen, also received praise for his pitch on a new virtual reality technology that aims to enhance the rehabilitation process for patients recovering from injuries. The judges were impressed with the potential impact of Michael’s idea on the healthcare industry.
Another notable pitch came from Los Medanos College student, Maria Lopez, who presented her plan for a social media platform that connects small businesses with college students looking for part-time jobs. The judges were impressed with the potential for this platform to bridge the gap between small businesses and the younger generation.
The competition was a fierce one, with all participants bringing their A-game. The judges had a difficult time deliberating, but finally, after much consideration, announced the winners. First place went to Sarah Rogers from Diablo Valley College, followed by Michael Nguyen from Contra Costa College in second place, and Maria Lopez from Los Medanos College in third place.
The winners received cash prizes, as well as mentorship and networking opportunities with local business owners and entrepreneurs. “This competition has given me the confidence to turn my idea into a reality,” shared Sarah Rogers. “I am grateful for the support and feedback from the judges and my fellow participants.”
The 4CD Business Pitch Competition was not only a celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation but also a testament to the dedication and hard work of students in the Contra Costa Community College District. The event was a reminder that with determination and support, anything is possible.
Overall, the competition was a huge success, and the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship hopes to make it an annual event. “We are proud of all the participants and their incredible ideas,” said Dr. Jack Jackson, Director of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “We look forward to seeing these students turn their pitches into successful businesses.”
