L’Oréal partners with Bakar Labs to provide access to 3D reconstructed skin models

The L’Oréal Group has announced its partnership with Bakar Labs, one of the leading biotechnology incubators at the University of California at Berkeley (USA). This collaboration offers startups developed at Bakar Labs the chance to benefit from and access L’Oréal’s 3D reconstructed skin models for free. The goal of this agreement is to pioneer the next generation of beauty products by leveraging L’Oréal’s extensive knowledge in microbiome science, Bakar Labs’ biotechnological expertise and other advanced biological technologies. This forward-thinking collaboration aims to redefine the landscape of the beauty industry, driving innovations that meet individual needs, improve dermatological health and address specific skin concerns with increasingly effective and innovative solutions. With a fully integrated production of 3D reconstructed skin, we will provide Bakar startups with everything they need to achieve their goals, said Barbara Lavernos, Deputy General Manager and Head of Research, Innovation and Technology at L’Oréal Group, who recalled that L’Oréal has been a pioneer in the creation of the 3D skin reconstruction method for more than 25 years. Bakar Labs, located in the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub on the UC Berkeley campus, offers more than 4,000 square feet of space for labs and offices for up to 50 startups at a time. In this sense, its diverse community of startups includes businesses working on therapeutic innovations, diagnostics, agricultural technologies and food technologies. We are delighted to partner with L’Oréal and benefit from their extensive experience in microbiome research and advanced biologic technologies, said UC Berkeley Professor David Schaffer, Director of Bakar Labs.
